A Chip Trend, Updated

Name that chip! What are these made from?

I think I've found a new food trend – chips made from unusual ingredients. See if you can guess what kinds of chips are in the first photo above.  (Hint: there's not a potato among them.)

Think you've got it?  Well, let's see!  The small, delicate chips on the upper left are made from cassava root (also known as yuca). These particular chips are made from cassava grown on a plantation in the volcanic highlands of Java, in Indonesia.  They are lightly sweet and salty, too, and have a great crunch to them.  We really liked the original sea salt flavor, but they also come in roasted tomato, cracked pepper, chili & kaffir lime… you get the idea. You can find them here. (Disclaimer: the company also makes sweet potato and taro chips, but I haven't tried those so I make no claims regarding their deliciousness.)

The bright yellow chips on the upper right are – you guessed it – plantain chips. They're made by a family-owned and run company, and there are only three ingredients listed on the box: plantains, safflower oil, sea salt. They're dense, rich, and fresh-tasting, and come in great flavors like sea salt, red chili, and cinnamon sugar.  You can find them here.

The round, brown chips on the bottom are… wait for it… falafel chips!  They're made from organic chickpeas, spices (think cumin), and grains, they're original, and they're completely addictive.  I opened a bag of the original flavor (they also come in chipotle) in our office and it was gone in minutes. The bag says they've been around since 1959, but they're new to me!  You can find them here.

What will they think of next?  Has anyone heard of any other crazy new chips to add to the trend?

UPDATE: We just received samples of another cool new chip!  Boulder Canyon Natural Foods must have been reading my mind (or this blog). I don't mean to wax poetic about snack food, but these rice & adzuki bean chips may be the best of the bunch. We could not stop eating them!  We were sent the sundried tomato-basil flavor, but they also come in chipotle cheese and natural salt flavors, which I would love to try.  The chips were ultra light, very crunchy, and had a touch of sweetness to them from the adzuki beans, but with a nice salty base.  Yum.  You can find out more about them here.

And did I mention that every chip mentioned in this blog is gluten-free? Not bad.

Name that chip! What are these made from?

Cassava chips - delicate, sweet, and salty all at once.

Plantain chips - rich, fresh-tasting, delicious.

Falafel chips - hearty, full of falafel flavor, totally addictive.

Rice and adzuki bean chips - light, super crunchy, fantastic!

Rice and adzuki bean chips, take 2.

Not exactly practical, with no retail distributors and large minimum orders. Did I miss something??
